Not a fan of the busy city center, but prefer to walk a bit more quietly? Then go to the Provenierswijk, north of the Central Station.
In this quiet, green oasis it is great to relax at several bars and restaurants. For example, on Proveniersstraat you have restaurant Le Nord and smoothie bar Bio Bodega, and you can get a Peroni or a good cup of coffee at Café Booon.
The district is named after the Proveniershuis? In the Middle Ages, this was a shelter for people with leprosy. Later it became a place where people could live in their old age, so-called proveniers. The building was on the Rotterdamse Schie, where the Provenierssingel starts at the current Schiekade. Although it is now in the middle of the city and a stone's throw from the busy center, it was outside the city at the time. The Proveniershuis was demolished at the end of the 19th century.
You can take beautiful walks along the canals. The quays have recently been refurbished and have returned to their former glory. This gives the district a stately 19th-century appearance.
