The misery in the port of Rotterdam is increasing! All kinds of ships that want to enter the port get stuck and ships that are in the port can no longer get out.

Around 1850, large-scale urban expansion towards the west began. This was known as the Second New Work. The street names Westersingel, Westplein and Westerstraat remind us of this western expansion. Before 1850, the more northerly Westerstraat was the southernmost dike. This was part of the First Newer Work. Het Nieuwer Werk can therefore be seen as an alternative name for the Scheepvaartkwartier.
