After the metro starts running above ground, you can enjoy the view from the metro over the Rotterdam skyline and shipping in the Rijnhaven and Maashaven. Get off at Zuidplein metro station, a bustling connection hub for Rotterdam South and the hinterland.
For a complete and pleasant day out, the Zuidplein shopping center with 155 shops is an excellent place. The shopping center was built between 1962 and 1972 on a vacant lot between the wide arterial roads and the metro viaduct under construction.
The indoor design by the Rotterdam architect Hermanus Dirk Bakker was very progressive for that time, with about 40 bus lines at street level and the metro station above it. The shopping center with more than 160 shops is located on the first and second floors.
Did you know…
After the opening by Mies Bouwman, part of the retail offer consisted of shop stalls and kiosks. After a number of renovations, these were replaced by ordinary shops and Zuidplein expanded into a shopping center of over 55.000 square meters with regional appeal. Zuidplein shopping center welcomes about 10 million visitors a year.

Within walking distance you can already see the Ahoy event complex. Around and behind Ahoy is the large Zuiderpark, an excellent place for a nice walk! So we continue our journey in that direction.
