At the end of the 19th century, mainly residential houses were built. The houses at Willemskade 19, 20 and 21 and the current Wereldmuseum are national monuments. The eastern part of the Willemskade was bombed away in 1940 and rebuilt immediately after 1945 with offices and seamen's house Stella Maris, later Maritime Hotel and subsequently called Thon Hotel Rotterdam.
Willemskade and Willemsplein are now home to some of the most expensive apartments in Rotterdam and the Scheepvaartkwartier is in the top 50 of the richest neighborhoods in the Netherlands.
