Description

After a nice walk over the Erasmus Bridge (or with the Wilhelminaplein metro) you arrive at the Kop van Zuid. Walk through the old warehouses and skyscrapers and you will automatically come across the Nederlands Fotomuseum, near Hotel New York.

The Nederlands Fotomuseum is a treasure trove and a showroom in one. With more than 5,6 million images in the collection, they watch over the Dutch photographic heritage, in order to show it in the context of today. For anyone who wants to discover the story of Dutch photography from 1841 to the present, there is the Hall of Fame of Dutch Photography.

In this permanent exhibition you will find 99 distinctive images that have had a social and artistic impact and make you look at the world with different eyes.

Did you know…
The Nederlands Fotomuseum was founded from the estate of amateur photographer Hein Wertheimer. 129 archives are kept in the air-conditioned depots of the museum. They contain three million negatives and a large number of slides, prints and documents about the life and work of Dutch photographers such as Ed van der Elsken, Cas Oorthuys and Piet Zwart.

TIP:
The Photo Museum is located in the striking industrial building Las Palmas, once the workshop building of the Holland-America Line. The influence of the legendary route can still be felt here in Rotterdam icons such as the Cruise Terminal and Hotel New York – formerly the headquarters of the Holland-America Line.

Take a look around the neighborhood and learn more about the place where dock workers toiled in the past and emigrants said goodbye to their land. At the tip of the Kop you will find a beautiful reminder of those bygone times: the monument Lost Luggage Depot by artist Jeff Wall. Today the emigrants have given way to bon vivants and art lovers.

Continue traveling
The route continues by taking the metro at the modern Wilhelminaplein metro station. Take Metro D or E in the direction of De Akkers/Slinge to Zuidplein. Do you see that the platform is sloping? This is because the tunnel track continues under the Nieuwe Maas.
