Description

After a nice tram ride with line 23, you will probably have seen nice places along the way to visit later. You get off at the Stadhuis stop. At this stop there are two buildings side by side that survived the bombing of 1940: the Town Hall and the Post Office.

Rotterdam's city hall is one of the few buildings that miraculously survived the bombing in the May days of 1940. The building has served as town hall since 1920.

Did you know…
The post office is deliberately located a little further away from the street than the town hall? The building was built in the same period as the town hall, when the Coolsingel was completely overhauled. Because the post office had to be less noticeable than the town hall, it was placed 10 meters back. In practice it works a bit counterproductive: the post office now has a beautiful forecourt.

By the way, you haven't been able to buy stamps there for a long time: it was used for a while as an exhibition space and as a (brrr) clothing outlet, and will soon serve as a five-star hotel, conference room and even as a living space.

TIP:
Behind the imposing facade of the town hall are several courtyards and a beautiful courtyard. It can be visited for free during the week. You can also visit special rooms such as the council chamber, the citizens' hall and the wedding rooms with a guide. Make an appointment for this in advance. Call Must See – 084 867 5112

Continue traveling
The route continues past Hofplein and Pompenburg towards Raampoortstraat. Along the way you walk past the rust-brown monument in front of the Delftse Poort, or you look higher by walking along the yellow Luchtsingel.
