Description

The Westersingel is a special street with monumental buildings that were built between 1870 and 1900. The street was not hit by the bombing of Rotterdam (14 May 1940), so part of the canal is still in its original state.

There are a number of special and old trees on the Westersingel, often combined with works of art. That is why the canal is also called the Cultural Axis of Rotterdam. This cultural axis took shape especially in 2001 when Rotterdam was the cultural capital of Europe.

Did you know?

A group of evergreen oaks (Quercus turneri 'Pseudoturneri') stands fairly south on the canal. These oaks are, as the name implies, green all year round. These are two of the twenty-two copies that occur in Rotterdam.
