Description

Rotterdam is known as a new, modern city. Yet you will find memories of the Second World War between all architectural delights, a time when the city was destroyed and after which it had to be rebuilt.

Because this should never be forgotten, you will find all kinds of memorial monuments throughout the city, such as De Boeg at the foot of the Erasmus Bridge. The statue was erected in memory of the 3500 crew members of the Dutch merchant ships who lost their lives in the war.

Did you know…

De Boeg is not the only war memorial in Rotterdam? A little further on the Stieltjesstraat is the Jewish Children's Monument. It contains the names of all 686 children who were deported from this place in the city to camp Westerbork. Many of them never returned.

TIP:

Go to the Jewish Children's Monument on Stieltjesstraat and look across the Maas. Everything you see now was not there just after the war. Except for the Laurenskerk, the town hall and the post office, the whole city had to be rebuilt.

Did not know the whole picture!

Have been walking the Westersingel from CS to West-Kruiskade for years, I have never seen that image before. A shame actually, now understand what it stands for!
