Description

The historic Noordereiland is located in the middle of the Nieuwe Maas. This district is connected to the city by special bridges. The striking Willemsbrug from 1981 immediately catches the eye with its red color. The old Koningshaven Bridge, better known as De Hef, is no longer used, but remains one of the most beautiful bridges over the Meuse.

De Hef is a symbol for pre-war Rotterdam. Once there was the plan to demolish the old train bridge, but Rotterdammers rebelled massively. Today it is a monument with bullet holes. A direct link with the past.

Did you know…

The Noordereiland originally stuck on the south side of Rotterdam? By digging the Noorderhaven (now the Koningshaven) the island came loose and is now in the middle of the river.

And halfway across the island at Prins Hendrikkade 124 you will find Galerie Wind. This exhibition space is 10 years old this year. In honor of this, there is an exhibition by the late photographer Ben Wind. On June 27, 2010, Wind was in a helicopter that crashed on the Maasvlakte. Together with colleagues Rob Cloosterman and Ed Oudenaarden, among others, he followed the 'Tour du Port', a cycling tour in honor of the tour that took place in Rotterdam that year. The exhibition is on display until November 21.

TIP:

The phenomenal skyline of Rotterdam can be admired from the Maaskade. In the summer you can find here pop-up restaurant A la Plancha, where every fishing enthusiast can enjoy with a view of the city. Just dive into a brown pub like Café Rijnvaart. There you will meet purebred people from Rotterdam.
