Description

31 January 1953. Because the storm surge coincided with spring tide, the water in the southern North Sea rose to extreme heights. Dikes broke through and Zeeland and parts of Zuid-Holland flooded with more than 1800 deaths as a result. One thing was certain: that should never happen again.

After the flood disaster, the Netherlands did everything in its power to prevent the country from being hit by such a terrible natural disaster again. That is why the Delta Works were built. The Maeslantkering at Hoek van Holland was only built in 1997, so it is not officially part of it, but is unofficially considered the final piece of our line of defense against the water. By closing two huge doors, the water can be kept out.

Did you know…

Do you have a view of this immense construction in the Keringhuis? In the information center you can take guided tours and hear everything about how the Netherlands is protected against water.

TIP:

Combine your visit to the Maeslantkering with a harbor tour. You start in Hoek van Holland and then sail via the Breeddiep to the Europoort. You will also pass the Second Maasvlakte. In the seaport you see ships that are larger than a block of flats and you look your eyes out. You can not get closer to the port of Rotterdam than this.

Extra info Public transport: From the station you can use a taxi or a bicycle. You can rent these in the center of Hoek van Holland. The distance to the Keringhuis is approximately 4 kilometers. On foot you can walk from the station in about XNUMX minutes along the Nieuwe Waterweg to the Keringhuis.
