Description

In the Feijenoord district in Rotterdam South you will find the Essalam Mosque. This is the largest mosque in the Netherlands and is therefore an important city icon. The dome is 25 meters high and the minarets stand out with their 50 meters.

The building was designed by architect Wilfried van Winden, and is inspired by the Grand Mosque in Medina. In 2010, the mosque was taken into use by the Sunni community in Rotterdam.

The mosque is open seven days a week and is open to visitors. For a guided tour you can do so without obligation contact record with the organization. Do take off the shoes, of course.

Did you know…

The mosque has been discredited several times? First because of foreign financing and later because of statements the imam made about gays.

TIP:

After visiting the mosque, you can enjoy one of the most famous and infamous shopping streets in South Rotterdam: De Beijerlandselaan. Did you know that two thirds of all Rotterdammers live in South Rotterdam? So dive into the neighborhood to meet some of them.
