The hidden stories of twenty monumental and special trees come to life with an augmented reality tree route. Together with the municipality of Rotterdam we have created a 4-kilometer walking route along these trees. With a smartphone, everyone can follow the route through the city on their own.
Virtual tree guide
Tree doctor Ronald Loch can be seen as a guide in hologram at special locations during the tree route. The route is full of historical material, old photos, old film material, but also 3D objects so that you can see, for example, how 'busy' it is in the Rotterdam underground. During the tree route, he takes everyone into the world behind the city trees.
Augmented reality
Augmented reality has also been added at various locations, making stories even more alive. For example, mobile app users can see how the Lijnbaanplataan stood in the backyard of the former Coolsingel hospital before the bombing of Rotterdam. It is also possible to see how the trees on the roof of the Kruispleingarage grow, how the Dakbos on the Depot of Museum Boijmans has been constructed or how the water storage at the Museumparkgarage is constructed.
MUST SEE app
The app can of course be downloaded for free in the App Store or in the Google Play Store. In the app, click on Routes -> Tree Route AR + in the main menu. Determine your route yourself, for example by removing certain locations, you will then automatically see how long the route will take.
UPDATE (1 Mar)
We've updated the app so that more users can take this route. Unfortunately, the app does not work on phones that are older than 3 years old or on low-budget devices. We have also better indicated in the app where the holograms start, so that you have to search less.
